VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL)--A Valdosta man and his dog are killed in a house fire.

Valdosta Fire Chief J.D. Rice says it happened around three a.m. Monday morning on the 600 block of West Street.

He says when fire crews got on scene they were told someone was inside.

Firefighters got in through a window and found 42-year old James Trotter on the floor of the kitchen and his dog in the front of the house.

Chief Rice says the fire may have started from a knocked over candle. Trotter's body has been sent for an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death.
