(WTXL) Valdosta, Ga. - The city of Valdosta is helping a Valdosta State University Professor in his surveillance program of mosquitoes.
Dr. Mark Blackmore, a Biology professor at Valdosta State University, is using city funds to track mosquito-borne diseases within the Lowndes County area.
The city will use the information to determine the correct times to spray pesticides. Although, the West Nile Virus is more common in the Western United States, Professor Blackmore says the virus can be carried by birds to other areas.
The Biology Professor helped monitor the West Nile Virus in Lowndes County, after the first positive cases were identified in 2011.
