VALDOSTA, GA (WTXL) -- Valdosta now has a new way to train its firefighters. The fire department recently acquired a new tool to improve what's called "forcible entry" training -- breaking down doors to get to people faster.
"The door is locked or either ajar, and we have to make entry -- regardless of whether fire conditions are showing, or it may be to assist EMS when a person is down," said instructor and firefighter Matthew Davis
A door simulator allows firefighters to practice entering through different kinds of doors -- those that swing in or out, wooden or metal, deadbolt or lock. The goal is to reduce property damage and still get the job done.
"By being able to use this prop, it allows us worst-case scenario possibilities, so we can get better and more efficient at what we're doing," Davis said.
It's a team effort: one firefighter makes initial contact with an axe, and another wedges a tool to help pry the door open.
While VFD has trained on forcible entry before, this is the first time that a simulator will be used. It cost $8,000 to the department, and recruits say they're preparing to tackle real-life situations.
"It gives us an opportunity firsthand to really test the structure of a door," said recruit Terrial Small, "and when it comes down to the citizens, they'll be more welcome and feel peace of mind that we'll be able to get in and protect them whenever we need to."
"We're firefighters. We like to be good at our job. We like to be effective, not only for the safety of our ourselves, but for our citizens," Davis said. "We're doing our part, so we're all excited."
VFD expects to train about 100 of its employees with the new simulator, which is also being used to train other local fire departments.
