WASHINGTON (AP) — A survey shows U.S. businesses added 166,000 jobs last month, a modest gain that suggests hiring continues to improve at a modest pace.
Payroll company ADP says employers added just 159,000 jobs in August and 161,000 in July, both slightly lower than the original estimates.
The ADP's figures often diverge from the government's more comprehensive jobs report. But they may end up being the only measure of September hiring for a while. The Labor Department will have to delay its September jobs report, scheduled for Friday, if the government shutdown goes past Wednesday.
