Update: TFD say electric blanket caused early morning fire

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (TFD)-- The Tallahassee Fire Department has determined the cause of a fire Tuesday morning, an electric blanket. Officials say that the electric blanket was being used in the garage for a pet cat. A cardboard box touching the blanket caught on fire and spread through the garage into the attic.

No injuries were reported at the scene and damages from the fire were estimated at $80,000.

The Tallahassee Fire Department responds to an early Tuesday morning house fire located in the 8300 Block of Yellow Lane.

A spokesperson for TFD says the resident was alerted by a smoke alarm at around 3:21 a.m. and called 9-1-1.  She escaped through a window after she was unable to unlock her front door. 

When firefighters from Station 12 arrived, they encountered heavy fire in the garage and attic of a single story, wood frame house.  Fire crews put out the fire and searched the home for victims.  No injuries were reported at the scene and damages from the fire were estimated at $80,000. 

The Red Cross was called out to assist the resident. 

TFD was assisted on scene by LCSO and Chaires-Capitola Volunteer Firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Tallahassee Fire Department.
