ATTAPULGUS, GA (WTXL) - Troopers are releasing the name of the person who died in a crash in Decatur County.

According to the Decatur County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened Wednesday morning on Highway 27 near Watauga Road in Attapulgus.

Georgia State Patrol said 28-year-old Maria Handsford was driving northbound on Highway 27 near mile marker 6 when she drifted onto the median.

Troopers said she overcorrected, swerving across the northbound lanes. They said she then overcorrected again, swerving into the southbound lanes where she hit Gary Cooper's vehicle head-on.

The cars came to a rest and caught on fire, trapping the victims, troopers said. They added that motorists who drove by helped notify law enforcement, who came and helped free the victims.

Handsford was pronounced dead, while Cooper was rushed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in serious but stable condition. Cooper's passenger was taken to Bainbridge Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Georgia State Patrol is urging drivers to slow down and always pay attention to the road. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
