UPDATE 12/11/12

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)-- Details are emerging, but a law enforcement official says at least one person is dead "and maybe more" at a Portland, Ore., area shopping mall.

Clackamas County sheriff's Lt. James Rhodes says the gunman has been "neutralized." He said he wasn't sure if the shooter is dead. Officers have been going store-to-store at the Clackamas Town Center to secure the scene, but Rhodes said there is no indication that there was more than one gunman.

One witness said the scene "was just awful."

A woman shopping in the Macy's for a Christmas dress for her daughter when she heard a two or three pops that sounded like firecrackers. She said hundreds of shoppers and mall workers started running and that there was "chaos."

Witnesses told the AP the shooter was short, with dark hair, dressed in camouflage, had body armor and a rifle and was wearing a white mask.

Another witness said she heard about 20 shots.
