Tallahassee, Fla (WTXL) - A Florida circuit judge has released transcripts that may reveal more details about the use of stingray technology by the Tallahassee Police Department.
Stingray technology allows Police to monitor and intercept public cell phones. The stingray technology can transmit signals to police instead of the nearest mobile network tower.
TPD's use of stingray technology came to premise in an 2010 hearing when it was revealed that officers had used the technology to track the location of a rape victim's cellphone to a Tallahassee apartment.
The American Civil Liberties Union is hoping that the release of these transcripts strengthens transparency about the use of stingray technology. The ACLU filed a motion in February to unseal the entire 14 pages of transcripts containing TPD testimonies from the 2010 suppression hearing.
The majority of the transcripts had been released, but portions of the documents were left sealed until the state attorney rendered a decision about making the testimonies public.
Benjamin Stevenson, an attorney with the ACLU of Florida, says the revelation of these documents is a victory for public knowledge. We reached out to the Tallahassee Police Department for a comment, but have not heard back yet.
