MIAMI (AP) — Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the University of Miami are working together to prevent and treat concussions among student athletes.

The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1PAdrgB ) reports the two are working to catalog and treat concussions in every public high school and for every sport.

The initiative began about four years ago and has recorded almost 600 concussions. Many concussions, however, go largely undetected or undocumented, and the program doesn't track about 55 other private and charter schools across the country with contact sports teams.

Gillian Hotz, director of the concussion program at the University of Miami, says the program has already produced information-rich data and is working to improve response from some schools.

Hotz says they are striving to find ways to prevent concussions and make games safer.
