United Way of the Big Bend Seeks Math and Reading Mentors

Posted

TALLAHASSEE Fla.-- With a new school year staring in less than a month, the United Way of the Big Bend is looking for mentors for its math and reading pals programs.

The United Way matches the mentors one on one with students in Gadsden, Leon and Taylor counties.

They are recruiting people to help now through the end of September.

The reading pals program is a 25-week commitment, and the United Way is launching the math pals program at Ruediger Elementary and Sealey Elementary, in the hopes of helping 3rd grade students who are showing deficiencies in math.

According to the United Way, last year in Leon County, 73% of the Reading Pals students achieved at least one years' worth of reading growth from Fall to Spring.
