FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A 4-year-old crying in an unlocked van with her mother unconscious from a suspected overdose had been found by a passerby in Florida.
The Sun Sentinel reports Boca Raton police say the two were discovered Monday morning. In a released recording of a man’s 911 call the girl told him she wanted to go to school. The 30-year-old mother, Colleen Jezrel Nichols, was arrested on suspicion of committing child neglect.
A dispatcher told Andres Rivera to give the phone to the girl who then answered questions until firefighters and paramedics arrived.
A Palm Beach County judge gave Nichols orders including no contact with her daughter.
Nichols was released from jail on $1,000 bond. Her assistant public defender couldn’t be reached by the Sentinel for comment.
Authorities say the girl is with family.
