TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- A day treatment program for adults with developmental disabilities is the July winner of Awesome Tallahassee's $1,000 grant.

The Ukelele Players of Pyramid program is run through the Tallahassee Pyramid Program, which provides visual and performing arts activities, as well as physical, nutritional and behavioral assistance.

The ukulele group meets weekly to learn how to play the instrument, which in turn, allows them to re-gain life skills like communication, physical movement, and emotional growth.

They applied for the Awesome Tallahassee grant, so the program could provide ukuleles for the students to take home, so they can practice and hopefully perform for the community.

"Music is a way for them to get in touch with some of their talents that may be hidden or never used before or provided music for them, so it's fun and very rewarding," said class instructor Ken Winker.

The grant will allow the program to buy between 20 and 25 ukuleles.
