After a rocky start to the season, the 3-4 University of Florida athletic department has decided to part ways with head football coach Jim McElwain.

Both sides mutually agreed to parting ways, Athletic Director Scott Stricklin announced Sunday.

"We want to thank Coach McElwain for his efforts in leading the Gator football program," said Stricklin. "We are confident Coach Shannon will provide the proper guidance to the players and rest of staff during this time and we will begin a national search for the next head coach."

Associate head coach Randy Shannon will serve as the interim coach for the reminder of the season.

While the parting of ways is agreed upon, the terms of the separation are still in negotiations.

As coach of the Gators, McElwain was 10 games over .500 in 44 career games with two Southeastern Conference Eastern Division titles (2015, 2016) during his tenure.

New interim head coach Randy Shannon has 25 years of coaching experience and was the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes from 2007-2010 with a 28-22 record.
