TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-- The U.S. National Forest Service is prescribed burning in the Wakulla County portion of the Apalachicola National Forest.
Forest service officials say the controlled fire will improve wildlife habitat, eliminate vegetation build up and reduce the threat of wildfires.
The first burn, scheduled to cover 2,175 acres, will take place in the area of Brown House Hunt Camp off Forest Road 309. The second burn is scheduled for the area north of Forest Road 13 and Bradwell Bay Wilderness. It will cover 1,844 acres.
Residents in the areas may see smoke on Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26. During that time, drivers are asked to use caution by driving slowly and using turning on their lights, especially when its foggy. Fog and smoke can mix and decrease visibility on roads.
This is just one of many prescribed burns the Apalachicola National Forest is doing prescribed burning season. People who are sensitive to smoke can be alerted to future burns.
