TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Tybee Island is seeking funding to help the beach community update its official list of historic properties.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1HqXqvg ) city officials on Tybee Island are applying for a $30,000 grant from the state Historic Preservation Division. The city plans contribute about $12,000, mostly through in-kind services.
Bill Garbett, a Tybee city councilman, says the island hasn't conducted a survey of its historic homes and buildings since 2003, when about 450 properties were found to be historic.
Chantel Morton, director of the Tybee Island Development Authority, says now the total number could be as high as 600 properties. To qualify for historic status in the U.S., homes and buildings must be at least 50 years old. Owners of historic properties can qualify for special tax credits.
