TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-- It's been a long anticipated achievement for commuters, residents and business owners in Tallahassee. Two- way traffic has been reopened along Gaines St.
Residents young and old celebrated on April 25 at a ribbon cutting ceremony with city leaders and local business owners.
“It is open, it is ready for business," said City of Tallahassee Mayor John Marks. "It is ready for traffic, ready for businesses, ready for housing.”
After years of planning and months of construction, Mayor John Marks said this is a major milestone in the Gaines Street project.
“We have reached a critical mass where developers want to come to the city of Tallahassee and want to come to Gaines Street and that’s what we’ve been looking forward all the while,” said Mayor Marks.
Two-way traffic began at around 11:15 a.m. Business owners in the area say they are excited to see their businesses pick up again.
“I think the road opening today is exactly what we needed to get all of our business back again," said Heather Wade, owner of Avant-Garb Vintage Store on Gaines Street. She said she is ready for residents who may have been avoiding the area to see the new improvements.
“I think they’ll be really impressed with what we have here, lots of new businesses and a lot of us old businesses still here," Wade said, "so we’re happy to show it off.”
