VALDOSTA, GA (WTXL) - Two South Georgia men have been sentenced for their roles in a Valdosta dog fighting ring that officials say has been an investigation years in the making.
Raymond Hendrix, from Echols County, was sentenced the 16 months behind bars for animal fighting and conspiracy.
Willie Henderson, from Lowndes County, entered a plea deal for 93 months in prison for charges ranging from animal fighting to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The two admitted in June to operating a dog fighting gambling ring from 2008 to 2013.
United States Attorney Michael Moore, who worked the case, said, "Today's sentencing establishes that 'man's best friend' always deserves humane and respectful treatment. Perhaps the time these defendants spend locked in cages will send a strong message that cruel treatment of animals will never be tolerated."
