(WTXL) - President Donald Trump called Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum a thief, and the Tallahassee mayor said the top Republican is weak and is telling lies about him.

Trump's tweet offered no evidence against Gillum as Floridians engaged in early voting ahead of the General Election on November 6.

In a tweet Monday, Trump wrote that Florida can choose "a Harvard/Yale educated man named @RonDesantisFL who has been a great Congressman and will be a great Governor - and a Dem who is a thief and who is Mayor of poorly run Tallahassee, said to be one of the most corrupt cities in the Country!"

Gillum's initial tweet said that "On Twitter there is a choice between having the courage to @ the person you are trash talking, or not. @realDonaldTrump is howling because he's weak. Florida, go vote today."

Later Gillum tweeted that "I heard @realDonaldTrump ran home to @FoxNews to lies about me. But as my grandmother told me - never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, but the pig likes it. So ignore him and vote, Florida!"

The two have exchanged tweets before in October, with Trump calling Tallahassee "one of the worst & most corrupt cities in the USA" and Gillum responding that Trump was telling a "lie about me from the most powerful office in the world and still don't have the courage to @ me."
