Truck drivers must electronically record hours

WASHINGTON (AP) - A new government rule requires an estimated 3 million commercial truck and bus drivers to electronically record their hours behind the wheel in an effort to enforce regulations to prevent fatigue.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration plans to release the rule today.

Drivers now are required only to keep logs of their driving hours on paper. Critics say it's easy to change the logs or keep two sets of records to evade restrictions on hours.

Efforts to require electronic logs date back more than a quarter of a century, opposed by drivers who own their trucks.
