WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Troopers have identified the 30-year-old Crawfordville man who died after crashing into a garbage truck on Woodville Highway Thursday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning on Woodville Highway.
They say Stephen Berry, 30, of Crawfordville was driving his 2015 Nissan Versa northbound on Woodville Highway and failed to slow down for a garbage truck that was stopped in the road.
The front of Berry's car then crashed into the back of the garbage truck.
Berry was pronounced dead on scene by Wakulla Fire Rescue. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and it is unknown if alcohol was involved. No other injuries were reported.
Troopers say an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
FHP was assisted on scene by Wakulla County Fire Rescue and the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office.
According to a post Berry shared on social media Wednesday night, the father of two had just received his firefighter certificate.
In a Facebook post, Wakulla County Fire Rescue sent their condolences to Berry's family.
Fatal crash shuts down Woodville Highway, authorities investigating
WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A fatal accident shut down the intersection of Woodville Highway and Coastal Highway in Crawfordville early Thursday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol is asking motorists to use an alternate route as they investigate the fatal accident.
Troopers reached the scene at 5:29 a.m. Thursday, and at 5:40 a.m. the FHP site indicated the accident resulted in a fatality.
The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office says that Woodville Highway between the Wakulla Station Intersection and the Hwy 98 intersection is closed.
Northbound traffic on Hwy 363 from Hwy 98 is being rerouted and southbound traffic from the Wakulla Station intersection is being rerouted, WCSO said.
Please plan on using alternate routes if you travel through this area on your morning commute, law enforcement said. It will be several hours before the road can be reopened.
