KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a 12-year-old was hit by a car as he was crossing a road to get onto a school bus.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the crash happened around 6:40 a.m. Thursday near Kissimmee.

Troopers say Caleb Burgos was airlifted to an Orlando hospital in critical condition. Witnesses say the school bus was coming to a stop with its amber lights on, but the stop sign had not yet been deployed when a Nissan struck the boy.

An investigation continues. No charges were immediately filed.
