SNELLVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Gwinnett County fire officials say nearly 30 students have been evaluated after pepper spray was released inside a classroom.

Lt. Jerrod Barrett said in a statement that the department was called to Shiloh High School in Snellville Monday morning after officials reported that an irritant caused coughing among students in one classroom.

Barrett says a hazardous material team checked the area and determined that pepper spray had been released in the classroom.

Officials say 28 students were evaluated. Eleven were treated for exposure and have been released.

Details on what caused the spray to be released were not immediately available.
