ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Trace amounts of ash from a remote Alaska volcano have fallen on an Aleutian Islands community, but the latest ash cloud remained just under the 20,000-foot threshold considered to be a major threat to trans-continental aircraft.
Geologist Kristi Wallace of the Alaska Volcano Observatory says the aviation color code for Pavlof Volcano remains at orange, just under the highest ranking of red, which would mean a dangerous eruption was imminent or underway.
Palvof is 625 miles southwest of Anchorage
Ash was found overnight on cars in Sand Point, an island community of nearly 1,000 near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. Wallace says the ash was like a film covering windshield glass. Samples were collected.
Wallace says an ash cloud at 12:40 a.m. Sunday Alaska Daylight Time reached 19,500 feet.
