TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Over at the Tallahassee Police Department, barriers are being broken, this time the agency is celebrating its first black, female motor cop.

Tyesha Gates is the first African-American, female motorcycle officer.

Gates says this has been a dream of hers for years, and the absence of officers that look like her only pushed her to strive higher. Now Gates wants to remind others that they can follow their dreams, just like she did.

"People are proud because of course in this city, they've never seen that before," said Gates. It's something that shows people if they want to do it, they can."

Gates says she was honored to receive training and guidance during her journey toward becoming TPD's first black, female motorcop.
