TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Police Department is warning motorist to lock their vehicles.

A recent rash of car burglaries in Killearn, have prompt law enforcement to ask residents top be proactive.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports, in January, there were 43 car burglaries in the residential neighborhood, 41 of which were because residents left their car and truck doors unlocked.

TPD Officer Scott Besk says, "It's a group of people targeting these cars and they're just shopping door handles," Beck said. "If they don't see anything in the car and it's locked then they move on to the next one."

All of the burglary cases are unsolved, Beck said. Investigators have recovered the stolen cars but have not made any arrests.

The break-ins have become such a problem that TPD set up two traffic signs in the neighborhood, one at Killarney Way and Raymond Diehl Road and one near Celebration Baptist Church near Centerville Road, that reads, "Tallahassee Police reminds you lock before you leave and drive safely."

Many of the items stolen are laptops, firearms and purses. Beyond locking doors and removing valuables, Beck says residents must be on the look out for any suspicious activity in their neighborhood and to report all car break-ins, even if nothing is taken.
