TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Police Department is warning the community about a recent scam where a scammer is posing as a TPD investigator.

According to TPD, the scammer calls or texts people and tells them they are being investigated for some type of crime, before demanding payment via a Green Dot or other gift card.

They say the caller spoofed their main line (850-891-4200) to make it look like someone from the department is calling. Spoofing is a fraudulent or malicious practice in which communication is sent from an unknown source disguised as a source known to the receiver.

Police say that they will never, under any circumstance, ask for money to clear up a crime or any other thing.

If you receive a call of this nature, do not provide the scammer any payment over the phone. Hang up and call the Tallahassee Police Department at 850-891-4200 to file a report.
