TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Police Department and Cara-Star Recycling will join forces to reduce the potential for identity theft in the Capital City.
The event will provide free shredding services to community members who have documents that may contain personal information.
Identity theft and financial crimes are an ever-increasing issue facing law enforcement and the public. Identity theft is usually perpetrated to facilitate other crimes, such as credit card fraud or check fraud.
Thieves will use a variety of methods to obtain a victims personal information, such as rummaging through discarded trash which may contain a social security number or other information.
"If you throw your social security number, your date of birth, things that are unique to you in the trash can and I am a criminal and find it, I can essentially take over your identity and start applying for credit, loans and different things like that ."
Officials recommend shredding any documents you feel may have sensitive information.
