TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - Tallahassee City commissioners are recognizing the Tallahassee Police Department for its traffic education and enforcement roles.

The Florida Law Enforcement Liaison Program held its annual law enforcement challenge for 2013 and identified TPD as a leader in using traffic education to make Tallahassee's roads safer for drivers. Through TPD’s educational efforts, the city saw an 11% reduction in traffic fatalities, and a 69% decrease in "red light running".

TPD Public Information Officer David Northway says, “We have officers in vehicles as well as officers on motorcycles. we also go out into the community and do simply education programs. We’re talking with citizens, talking with people as they come through intersections, explaining to them why they need to follow the rules that the laws have set for them.”

The Tallahassee Police Department is also being recognized by The Florida Bicycle Association for their efforts in traffic safety.
