LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - With kids going back to school this week, Leon County Schools along with The Tallahassee Police Department celebrated at Kate Sullivan Middle School for its first week of their new off duty program to keep schools safe.
According to Leon County Schools Superintendent, Rocky Hanna, about 160 officers volunteered on their off days to help protect children at local elementary schools.
A program, Hanna says, will give extra support to keep schools safe.
"Things have changed unfortunately things have changed in our society and safety is always job one," said Hanna. "Before we ever talk about educating a child we have to protect them from potential harm, and it reassures parents, and reassures the community when they drive by and see a TPD car or a deputy sheriff's car in front of the school and they see that officer there, it kind of reassures those parents that their children are safe."
Hanna goes on to say he will go to the city commission at the beginning of the year in hopes to re-institute the D.A.R.E program.
