TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Police Department is trying to lower the number of thieves that come to your house this holiday season.

Officers placed several "box drop-off" stations around town. Residents have been using them to throw away gift packaging instead of leaving empty boxes outside their homes.

TPD encourages people to take advantage of them and expresses how leaving boxes of expensive items outside of your house isn't the safest way to dispose of them.

"Basically you are letting everyone know 'Hey I have these items inside of my home.' It's a tool that criminals use as far as targeting peoples' houses. So we just want to make sure everyone is safe," said TPD Officer Damon Miller. "We have drop off locations here at Tom Brown Park, Myers Park, Mission San Luis Park and Jack McLean Park. So feel free to come by anytime. Just take your box, throw it over top and that's it. Easy as that."

The box drop off stations will remain at the locations through January 1.
