TPD arrests man for killing of 20-year-old in March

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Police have arrested a Tallahassee man for the killing of 20-year-old Maurice Brown back in March. 

The Tallahassee Police Department arrested Jeremy Newkirk, 28, on Friday in the Dewey Street area. 

TPD says after interviewing witnesses and examining the evidence, investigators were able to obtain a warrant for second degree murder.  

TPD additionally is charging Newkirk with possession of cannabis with intent to sell during the arrest. 

He was taken to the Leon County Detention Center. 


TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Police have identified the victim who was shot and killed during an early morning shooting near Basin Street and West Tennessee Street over the weekend.

The Tallahassee Police Department says that Maurice Brown, 20, was shot around 5 a.m. on March 31. 

Prior to officers’ arrival, Brown was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.  

He has since passed away from his injuries.

Prior to officers’ arrival, the victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.  

The case has been assigned to investigators with TPD's Violent Crimes Unit.
