TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The weather from Tropical Storm Colin is expected to bring challenges to drivers out on the roads in North Florida.
That's why the field manager of Tallahassee's AAA office says the key is to drive slow and steady to give yourself and other drivers more reaction time, since wet roads mean it will take a longer distance for vehicles to stop or turn, compared to dry roads.
W.D. Williams says it's also important to drive smart, especially when dealing with potential flooding.
Other tips from AAA:
- Make sure your tires have plenty of tread on them. If tires are worn, they are much more likely to lose contact with the road which could potentially lead to hydroplaning and losing control of the vehicle.
- Make sure wipers are in good shape, with visibility being a key concern.
- Always drive with headlights on whenever it's raining. It's the law, and it allows other drivers to see you.
- Do not to drive into a flooded road.
"If the road is flooded in front of you, try to avoid it if all possible," advises Williams. "You don't know how deep the water is, and you don't know what's under the water's surface, and so, you don't want to end up stalling your vehicle and damaging your vehicle. So, if you see floodwaters, you know, turn around and find another route to get to your destination."
AAA says they're often called to assist with stalled vehicles that try to venture into flooded roads. The agency also advises driver stay off the roads unless they have to be on them, until the weather clears up.
