ATLANTA, Ga. (WTXL)-- Secretary of State Bob Kemp is reminding Georgians to be careful where they donate this holiday season.
Kemp says it's important to ensure the legitimacy of a charity before giving money, so that your gifts can be used properly.
In order to make sure, Kemp suggests researching charities before you contribute, through sites like the Better Business Bureau and Guidestar.
He also says to be wary of telephone calls asking for money and to never give your credit card or bank information to a caller.
Kemp also warns, that if you're looking for a tax deduction, make sure the organization has tax deductible status. "Tax exempt," "non-profit" and "tax deductible" mean different things. Only "tax deductible" means your contribution is deductible on your income tax return. Always make sure you get a receipt for proof.
When donating, Kemp says to be sure the charity is not just adopting a similar name to a larger organization.
And finally, he says to watch out for organizations that use questionable tactics to get you to donate, like sending un-ordered merchandise or invoices after you turn them down for a donation.
To report a complaint against a charitable organization, just visit the Secretary of State's website or call the Georgia Secretary of State's Investigations Division at 404-656-4793.
