TIFTON, GA (WALB) - More than $197,000 in state grant money will go towards treatment of those who go through the Tifton Drug Court.
The Georgia Council of Accountability Court is funding the grant.
The Tift County Commission approved the grant Monday night.
The money will be used for patient treatments and surveillance for officers.
The Accountability Court director said this grant will help make a difference.
"We all know that there is a question about criminal justice and how things are being handled in our communities," said Accountability Courts Director Cherysh Green-Caldwell. "So what this is, is an alternative to incarceration. Instead of arresting people and imprisoning people with the disease of addiction, we choose to treat them. So that's what this court is about, it's about redemption, it's about sobriety, it's about helping those in need."
This year’s grant is $40,000 more than the funding the agency received last year.
The money will be available July 1.
