TIFTON, GA (WALB) - A 10-year-old student at Tift County Schools was taken into custody for possession of a firearm on school grounds, according to school officials.

On Monday, a student served by Horizon Academy and Tift County Schools, had the gun while at Horizon, officials said.

While investigating the incident, it was discovered the child also had the gun out while riding a bus to school and pointed it at another Horizon Academy student, according to the Tift School district.

The gun was not loaded, according to the school system.

School officials said federal laws prevent the district from revealing discipline details related to a specific student.

Any student in possession of a gun would be punished based on the system's code of conduct, officials said. Possible punishments listed for this offense include expulsion and referral to law enforcement, officials said.

Horizon Academy programs provide support for students who might require residential or other restrictive placements based on the severity of emotional and behavioral disorders.
