Tift Co. school board approves school redistricting plan

TIFT CO., GA -- The Tift County School System will be redistricted next year to cut down on the number of schools a student will attend through their education.

The Tift County Board of Education voted four to three to approve a redistricting plan they have developed to meet their charter system status.

The plan would reconfigure grades to cut down on school changes, having kindergarten through fifth grade be in the same school. Currently, a student would attend seven different schools before graduating.

"We feel like that was not long enough at each school for us to develop really strong relationships between students, parents, or staff," said Tift County Schools Director of Communication Stacey Beckham. "Which we know is key to success for our students."

Some parents were not in favor of the redistricting plan because it could mean schools farther from their homes, or changing the historic schools their family went to. The new plan will go into effect for the 2018-2019 school year.
