THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WTXL)- The City of Thomasville is competing for a spot on USA Today's 10best list, for Best Historic Small Town.
Time is running out to vote to help the City secure the spot.
The City of Thomasville was formed back in 1825. During the Civil War, it played an important role for the Confederate army, supplying goods for the war effort. It was also a Prisoner of War camp for a brief time during 1864.
Following the war, Thomasville became a haven for northerners, called the "Winter Resort of the South."
City tourism officials say it's this storied past that landed Thomasville the 10best nomination.
"If we were to happen to win the contest we would be thrilled, over the moon! And we would have wonderful bragging rights about that," said Bonnie Hayes, the tourism director for the City of Thomasville. "Hopefully in the long term we do hope people would see that and say, well I've got to go see that Thomasville, we'd love for people to come and visit and share the excitement of our town," Hayes added.
