THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WTXL) - Thomas University is addressing concerns Friday night after receiving a warning from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

All colleges and universities under the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools must meet a certain set of standards to maintain their accreditation.

Now Thomas University won't find out exactly what area needs improvement until they received the detailed report come mid January.

However, university officials want to make it clear: they are still accredited by the committee.

Under this warning, TU now will have until December 2017 to make changes in order to meet the council's standards.

If the school still does not meet the required standard, SACS has the ability to place the school on probation or even remove its accreditation. But TU officials said they are committed to providing an outstanding education for students and the improvements that are needed will be made.

"We have been notified that there is an area that they identified at the college that isn't quite up to snuff, and so they've brought that to our attention and they're giving us the opportunity to fix it. It's an opportunity for improvement really," said university president Dr. Andy Sheppard.

TU officials say they wanted to make sure the public was informed about the warning in order to maintain their transparency and demonstrate their commitment to making the school the best it can be.

Over the next year the school's president also saying that they have plans to speak with stakeholders about expanding program innovations to help their students gain access to more jobs.
