THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - Wednesday was forecast to be a sunny and warm one in Thomasville, but that didn’t stop the Cross Creek Elementary school students and teachers from what to do in the event of severe weather.

When the announcement comes, its important to know what happens next.

Students filed out of their classrooms and into hallways away from windows and doors leading outside.

The boys and girls sat quietly with their heads down and covered while the teachers made sure the students would be safe from a potential tornado.

When the drill ended, students went back to their classes, and WTXL met up with the Thomas County’s deputy director of emergency management to find out if the students made the grade.

“They did really well. I know I it’s a drill and they’re not going to be panicky or anything like that, but the kids listened to instruction very well. They went right where they were supposed to and it was really really in a good timely manner," said Lisa Griffis.

Although practicing drills like this can be scary, but it’s important that they are practiced. That way, students and teachers know exactly what to do in the event of severe weather.

Griffis suggests that parents also work with their children to put together a severe weather kit, and come up with a plan on weathering severe storms.
