THOMAS COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Thomas County Prison is closing today, Friday, June 30. The county commission voted earlier this year to shut down the facility.
The prison employed 29 people and housed more than 180 inmates.
In April, the plans were presented to the commissioners for a new facility. The estimated cost according to a plan presented by the prison warden says it will cost 5.5 million dollars to build.
Building the facility will help inmate labor estimated at 3.8 million dollars.
This unique treatment facility will ensure inmates with mental health issues are provided prompt and effective treatment in a rehabilitative environment.
Beginning on July 1, correctional officers with behavioral health certification in mental health units will receive pay raises.
