THOMASVILLE, GA (WTXL) -- First responders showed faculty at a Thomasville school Wednesday how to prepare for an active shooter situation.

The Thomas County Sheriff's Office, local emergency medical service, fire rescue, SWAT team and Thomasville police worked together to stage the drill at Brookwood School. Teachers, staff and students watched as first responders jumped into action.

Headmaster Randy Watts said the school has held lockdown drills in the past, but this was the first time it hosted an active shooter simulation to this scale.

"It's an evolving world, and it's one where we have to face the unthinkable and go through a scenario that we hope will never happen to us," Watts said, "but we're aware that active shooter situations occur in places that you don't anticipate them."

Thomas County has done similar drills at other schools in Thomasville. The Sheriff's Office said it's important for teachers and student to know what to expect from law enforcement during this type of situation.

"This is how we expect you to behave when we come, and this is what you should expect to see from us," said Captain Steve Jones. "We had some people that were very shocked at this response from law enforcement. It's something that you plan for, and it's something that you rehearse for, but you never ever are totally prepared for."
