THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. — A search is underway in Thomas County for a baby bear that escaped from a local wildlife rescue.
Lorraine Conklin, who owns the Nepanthic Society, says that the baby bear was brought to the facility Wednesday from North Georgia.
The bear was safely secured in a fenced area at the wildlife rescue but Thursday morning, the bear went missing with no sign of an escape being made.
Conklin says the rescue has been open for 39 years and has never had an animal escape. She says she has no idea how the bear escaped, since there's no sign of digging or open fencing.
The Thomasville Police Department deployed a K-9 unit to search a wide area of the woods Thursday morning.
Conklin says the K-9 searched for the bear for about an hour. Police say they were unsuccessful in their search.
For now, Conklin says that they will lay out food in hopes that the baby bear will return. She says the bear is no older than two and a half months old and weighs between 10 - 15 pounds.
