THOMAS CO., Ga. -- A woman is facing charges after Thomas County investigators say she stole thousands of dollars from a local elementary school's Parent-Teacher Organization.
The woman, 30-year-old Leslie Ann Christmas, took over as treasurer for the PTO of a Thomas County elementary school in May of 2012.
According to investigators, it only took a short time for her to begin stealing money. By June, Christmas reportedly began receiving money from checks and cash withdrawals taken from the organization.
Investigators are waiting for an official audit to know the exact amount of money Christmas took, but they say it's more than $20,000.
Parent teacher organizations raise money for schools. Each school generally has its own organization. The money is used to purchase items like playground and classroom equipment.
Christmas is charged with theft by taking.
