Documents: Men assaulted, kidnapped victim from Hardee's over alleged stolen shoes
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Newly released documents reveal that a man was beaten and kidnapped from a Tallahassee Hardee's last week because the suspects believed he had broke into their house and stole their sneakers.
Javen Whitehead, 28, has been arrested for the kidnapping, which occurred on Jan. 10, near the Hardee's restaurant on North Monroe Street. Authorities are seeking two other suspects and say everyone involved knows each other.
According to court documents, the victim said he was working at the Publix in the 5800 block of North Monroe street when he overhead some familiar voices asking another employee where he was.
The victim told investigators that the men were mad at him because they believed the victim broke into their home and stole several pair of sneakers. He told investigators that he got the sneakers from a friend earlier that day and didn't know they were stolen.
Afraid, documents say the victim ran out of the store, the two men chasing him while a third ran off to get a car to chase the victim. As the victim ran toward the nearby Hardee's restaurant, he was grabbed by one of the men who began hitting him in the face.
The other suspect, identified as Whitehead, also began beating up the victim. Documents say the third suspect then pulled up in a stolen Jeep, shoving the victim into the back seat.
The car then exited the parking lot and left the scene.
While sitting in the back sear, the victim told investigators that he saw a semi-automatic pistol sticking out of the waistband of one suspect. The victim said he felt they could have easily killed him, and they threatened to "hide" him several times.
"Hide," the victim explained after the investigator asked him, meant that a person could be killed and their body disposed of in a hidden location.
The victim also said that at least one of the suspects is a gang member, which investigators verified by pulling a criminal history, according to court documents.
Because the victim had the shoes at his home in Quincy, the victim said he told the suspects that he would take them to his street to get the shoes and return them to their owner.
They then drove the victim to his street in Quincy and let him out of the Jeep to get the shoes. The victim said he got the shoes, returned to the street, left the shoes by the street and called the suspects, telling them the shoes were there. Documents say the suspects left with the shoes and didn't return.
Documents say the victim had several scrapes on his limbs and his face and hands were bleeding, which was consistent with the account he gave.
Based on the evidence, investigators issued warrants for Whitehead's and the two other suspects' arrests. So far, Whitehead is he only one who's been taken into custody.
He has been charged with battery and kidnapping.
