TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A pet therapy program has just been launched with the assistance of Therapy Dog International (TDI).

Therapy dogs will now be used in the behavioral health unit of the hospital to treat a range of psychiatric disorders. The program began Sept. 15th with a certified therapy dog, Ginger, who started visiting the Capital Regional Medical Center's optional group therapy sessions.

The Behavioral Health Center treats adults 18 and older for a wide range of psychiatric disorders. The center said that pet therapy rounds out the center's diverse list of psychiatric services.

"We are thrilled to be working with TDI and to be offering this service to our patients," said Meg Young, Director of Behavioral Health Services at Capital Regional Medical Center. "Studies show that contact with pets is beneficial for patient care. The benefits include improved mood, reduced stress levels, decreases feelings of isolation, encourages communication and improves many physical ailments as well."

In the near future, Capital Regional said they planned to expand the pet therapy program throughout the hospital.
