The Perks and Benefits of Adopting an Older Pet

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Puppies and kittens are delightful, but their cuteness is accompanies with obedience training and little accidents here and there. Adopting a senior pet, however, can bring great rewards.

Mia, an adorable and spunky bull terrier, is celebrating her 12-the birthday. That’s right, 12! And believe it or not, she still has many birthdays to celebrate. Possibly with you?

Pets are living now into their late teens. In today’s world, is even common to see a dog in their 20s! Mia may be 12-years-old, but with proper love and care she can expect five or more happy years to come. So why not adopt a senior friend?

Veterinarian Dr. Howard Small says senior pets have perks that puppies and kittens are still working out. There is no need for housebreaking or training. An older pet tends to be calmer and already trained.

Adoption fees for older pets like Mia, who has been at Bishop Animal Shelter SPCA for more than five years, are often drastically price reduced. Mia can go to her forever home for just $25. A small price for a rich emotional reward.

Rachel Tompkins says she loves her 14-year-old dachshund just as much, if not more, than any puppy she would have bought at the pet store.

Another perk of adopting an older pet from a shelter is that the facility usually has the health records of that animal, which is an important thing to consider when bringing a new addition into your home.

They also tend to be in GREAT HEALTH! This makes your trip to the veterinarian quick and easy.

Teeth look great, ears look great, skin looks great and done!

It is, of course, always a good idea to have a vet preform a full screening says Dr. Small. “To make sure this pet is going to be healthy for you moving forward.”

Regardless, adopting an older pet like Mia comes with more benefits than downfalls. It is a great opportunity to take a possibly abandoned friend and give them a loving place to live out the remainder of life.

Happy birthday to you Mia, and may all your dreams and wishes come true.
