MALONE, N.Y. (AP) - The latest on the hunt for two inmates who escaped from a maximum-security prison.
Authorities say one of two murder convicts who escaped from an upstate New York maximum-security prison three weeks ago wouldn't comply with them when they found him in the woods and was shot and killed. The other is still on the loose.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the killing of Richard Matt came after a civilian complaint about a gunshot fired at a camping trailer in Malone, 30 miles from the prison.
Customs and border patrol agents were helicoptered into the area. The team smelled gunpowder nearby, a sign a gun had been fired. Matt was in nearby woods.
State police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says agents told Matt to put up his hands. He says "he was shot when he didn't comply."
Police say Matt had a shotgun but didn't use it.
Police are using officers, dogs and helicopters in an area about 22 square miles in the search for escapee David Sweat.
