TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The holiday season is upon us and many people consider it to be a very happy time. But for others, holiday depression is a very real thing.

Depression during the holidays can come from many different places, but there are ways to ward it off.

Family Therapist Jane Marks suggested taking care of yourself, exercising, and participating in more things makes a big difference.

Marks also added that the feeling of isolation usually creates more depressive episodes during the holiday season.

"For others it can be a very isolating experience, and so for a lot of people the process invites anxiety and in some cases, particularly if you're by yourself, it invites depression. So for some adults as well as children it is a very difficult time," said Marks.

She also suggested that if you are prone to depression during the holidays because you don't have a family, creating a sense of family will help you feel like you are apart of something.
