TFD respond to early morning fire

Tallahassee, Fla (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Fire Department responded to a house fire at 7:59am this morning. The home was located in the 800 Block of Dover Street. A near by resident called 9-1-1 after smelling the smoke. The mother and child of the home were evacuted as TFD arrived. The fire started in the home's clothes dryer and was extinguished by firefighters. No injuries were reported and damages were estimated to be $40,000. Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced family of four.

The Tallahassee Fire Department offers some tips to keep you safe from home clothes dryer fires.

  • Have your service installed and serviced by a professional.
  • Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.
  • Make sure you clean the lint filter before and after each use.
  • Keep dryers in good working order.
  • Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe on the dryer is not restricted and the vent flap will open when the dryer is on.
  • Turn the dryer off when you leave home or go to bed.
