TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Staying warm in the winter, whether you turn up the heat or throw another log in the fireplace is a necessity, but if you're not careful, it can also be dangerous.
With the drop in temperatures forecast over the next 24 hours, many people will be looking for ways to heat their homes.
No matter what your heat source, the Tallahassee Fire Department officials say staying safe is key.
Space heaters need space, give three feet of space around them, and
turn them off when you're not using them.
With Kerosene heaters, always follow the manufacturers instructions, never fill them while they are on or still hot, and put them in a well-ventilated area because carbon monoxide fumes are deadly.
Make sure fireplaces and wood burning stoves are properly checked, cleaned and maintained, and only burn wood.
"You don't want to burn plastics or paper. Anything that can put off gasses
or create creacine that can line your chimney and cause chimney fires," said Deputy Fire Chief Richard Jones.
Make sure carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms are working.
Have a home fire escape plan, that means two escape routes that everyone in your home is aware of and a meeting place outside.
Fire extinguishers are rated A, B, and, C depending on what kind of fires they put out. Make sure you get the right one for your needs.
